Grandmaster meeting ends in unity (Oct 7th 1997)

The two Eastwood Society grandmasters, the Superior and the Inferior, met in Pennsylvania, USA, for Eastwood Summit '97. Two new movies, LA Confidential and Airforce One, and two old ones, Shine and Howard Sterns Pivate Parts, were shown to the esteemed gentlemen. Airforce One is a clear runner for the worst US action movie for 1997 -- coming soon to a cinema near you, while the other three are marked with the "Eastwood Society mark of approval (tm)".

The summit reaffirmed the Eastwood Society dedication to the filmatic arts and revitalized the bond between the US and European sections of the Society.

The good, the bad and the boring (April 25th 1997)

AnimLogo The big push for animated movies is underway in Oslo, Norway! The animation festival Animerte Dager started yesterday. The Eastwood Society was represented with 14 people throughout most of yesterdays screenings, and we were quite impressed with what was offered. Unfortunately, very few people had found the way to Soria Moria cinema this cold Thursday, which indicates that planning and the form of the festival could perhaps be improved next year. The animations where of high to very high quality, but the stories and the general impression of each animation ranged from totally mindblowing to pretentious, boring crap. Maybe next year all the long, boring animation could be in a separate section. :-)

If you plan to see some animated films in the near future, watch out for gems like the stunning "Wind, der stiller Wind" (Jevremovic) and "Carmen Habanera" (Korejwo) as well as the hilarious "Barflies" (Holfelt) and the feature film " Joe's Apartement" (Wegde). Oh, my!

So old, so new and still so old (March 21st 1997)

Good news: Star Wars is back. Bad news: It's the same movie they made 20 years ago.

A few Eastwood Society members teamed up to see the first of the three Star Wars "special edition" movies at Oslo Spektrum this weekend. Most of us had seen this movie several times before and to say it bluntly: This is not a film experience that improves with age (that goes for the age of the film as well as the spectator). The sound effects presented were much better than those found on the original sound track, but they were not much better than other Hollywood productions anno 1997. And, don't forget - adding new sound effects and a few minutes of outdated Jurrasic Park like computer animations does not change the movie much. Mark Hamill's acting and Princess Leia's haircut are still much more amusing than a few new computer animated animals (with realism even Ivo Caprino could create blindfolded using some clay puppets). If you have seen the movie before, stay clear. If you haven't, I guess you should see it - if not for the experience itself, you will at least finally understand some of the jokes and parodies made the past 20 years. Stavanger Aftenblad is a bit more positive, so if you read Norwegian, read their critic.

Norway's funniest movie critic online (March 20th 1997)

The movie critics found in Stavanger Aftenblad, written by Arild Abrahamsen and Dan Tagesen, are now online. Abrahamsens awesome reviews can be found, in Norwegian, on the Stavanger Aftenblad site. Together with Per Haddals and his keen judgement (find his reviews at the Aftenposten site), Abrahamsen is up there among the few great movie critics in Norway.

Oslo Kinematografer wired! (Oct 17th 1996)

Wow! After several cardiac arrests the past few days, I guess we have to face it: Oslo Kinematografer have stepped into the '90s. This quantum leap directly from the technological state of the '60s is nothing but amazing. You can now actually see what movies are on, just by connecting to their web site. Who knows, before you know it they may have their own domain name and offer ticket ordering!

Guest list revived (Sep 16th 1996)

Great media coverage for the Eastwood Society (Sep 16th 1996)

P3 Logo NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation) radio channel 3 featured the Eastwood Society on its program Safari Thursday, September 12th. "Under-Sherpa-Assistent" Ivar Høsteng was interviewed about the Society. Maybe it's time for the Society to decide on a base platform for a media strategy that may take us into the 21st century ?
